Bryce Canyon 3292

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in Southern Utah near the town of Ruby's Inn, just south of Route 12 on on Route 63. Bryce Canyon is about an hour North of Zion National Park on Highway 89. Best known for the hoodoos – pillars of rock, created by erosion over time. It is called "differential erosion" as the water changes the rocks by mechanical and chemical forces running down through the many crevasses. It is thought that water from rain and snow flows into the cracks, freezes then cracks off layers of the hoodoo spires, as the shapes constanly evolve. In spots like the Bryce Ampitheatre, the hundreds of hoodoo are absolutely mesmerizing and look almost like a "rock civilization". As part of the high plateau, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument can be see in the distance from many of the viewpoints. With Elevations over 9,000 ft., Bryce Canyon can be chilly and the air is quite thin. Carrying your bags up to your room might leave you winded and you might need some time to adjust. We were there on opening weekend, early April 2008 and there was still significant snow on the ground.
